Robert Kohnen (°1932) studeerde orgel aan het Lemmens-instituut te Mechelen en aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Brussel. Als clavecinist is hij autodidakt. In 1954 lag hij mee aan de basis van het Alarius-ensemble (met o.a. Janine Rubinlicht en Wieland Kuijken), een ensemble dat pioniersfunctie had in de nieuwe manier om oude muziek uit te voeren. Van 1960 tot 1971 maakte hij deel uit van het Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles. Met de gebroeders Kuijken en met vele andere specialisten op het gebied van de barokmuziek (Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen, Anner Bijlsma, René Jacobs, Paul Dombrecht, Roel Dieltiens, Danny Bond) realiseerde hij een vijftigtal opnamen. Hij treedt op in alle landen van Europa, USA, Canada, Israël, Turkije, Japan. Tot 1997 was hij clavecimbelleraar aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Brussel (Franstalige afdeling). Hij geeft meestercursussen in België, Frankrijk, Italië, de Verenigde Staten, Canada.

Robert Kohnen (° 1932) étudie l' orgue, à Malines tout d'abord, puis au Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Quant au clavecin, il est autodidacte. En 1954 il est l'un des formateurs de l'Ensemble Alarius, groupe pionnier dans la nouvelle façon d'interpréter la musique ancienne. De 1960 à 1971 il fait partie de l'Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles. Avec les frères Kuijken il se produit dans l'Europe entière, les USA, le Canada et le Japon. En soliste ou entouré de musiciens tels les Kuijken, Gustav Leonhardt, Frans Brüggen, Anner Bijlsma, René Jacobs, Paul Dombrecht, Roel Dieltiens, Danny Bond, il réalise un cinquantaine d' enregistrements. Robert Kohnen était professeur de clavecin au Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (jusque 1997) et donne des cours d'interprétation en Belgique, France, Italie, Etats-Unis, Canada.

Robert Kohnen (harpsichord) was born in 1932 in St.-Vith, Belgium, and studied organ at the Lemmens Institute, Malines, and the Brussels Conservatory. As a harpsichordist, he is self-taught. He was one of the founders of the Alarius Ensemble in 1954, and played an important part in the evolution of the unique approach to baroque literature of this group, and subsequently of the Kuijken Quartet - an approach which has brought them world renown. With them and also as a soloist he has given many recitals throughout Europe, in Japan, Israel and North America. From 1960 to 1971 he was a member of the Brussels-based "Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles", specialising in the performance of avant-garde music, together with a.o. the Kuijken brothers. In 1980, he toured the US and Canada as a representative of the Belgian Government in honour of the 150th anniversary of Belgian independence. In 1997 he retired as harpsichord professor at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, but continues teaching at numerous international masterclasses. As a continuo player he made numerous recordings with other leading baroque specialists (Barthold, Sigiswald and Wieland Kuijken; Paul Dombrecht, Danny Bond, René Jacobs etc.). His solo recordings include compositions by J.S. Bach, J.J. Fux, F. Couperin, J.Ph. Rameau, J. Haydn.
